All things being equal with price and performance, most of us given the option would choose the organic, the green, the natural. It just seems to be better, for our body and for the environment. Fortunately, in health care, there are more and more options that fit into this model.

We are grateful for the advances in science that have led to new medications to treat diseases that would otherwise cause our bodies damage. That same science is also helping to find natural solutions that may be used instead of proceeding to surgery and medications. As health care providers, we want to look for the most holistic approach to the care of our patients, and as such we turn increasingly to the natural side.

Our goal in treating dry eye disease (DED) is always to get patients into a normalized, noninflamed, harmonious state with their tear film. In recent years we have seen an increase in devices and chemical mediators that aim to reach this equilibrium in the most natural way possible. This article reviews some of these alternatives.
